However, in reality, leadership requires a wide – variety of skills, a positive, can – do attitude, assets, perspectives, experiences, expertise, judgment, wisdom, self – confidence, etc. In the final analysis, effective leaders become superior planners, understanding, utilizing, and proceeding with the most effective planning. All – too – often, empty rhetoric is applied in this area, rather than genuine commitment and hard work, so we must remember, PLANNING must be both interactive, and proactive. Let’s use the mnemonic approach, to review the essentials.1. Priorities; purposes: Before it is ever possible to plan properly, one must consider and create, the best, most relevant set of goals and priorities, Identify precisely what you believe is needed, and why! How will your plan address these, and what is the purpose of every action you propose? Why have you decided to go in this specific direction, and why do you consider it to be the best alternative?

2. Listen; learn; leadership: Repeat after me, I don’t have all the answers, and leading can’t be done alone! Listen far more than you speak, and when you do say something, make it relevant, and motivating. Learn as much as you can from everything you hear, observe, and witness, as well as from each experience! Effective leadership means addressing these needs, and being successful, often means being prepared, and planning thoroughly and effectively.3. Attention; attitude: You’ll never be a quality leader, until/ unless, you consistently maintain a can – do, positive attitude! Pay attention, and believe you can make a difference, and then, translate your intentions to reality, by properly planning accordingly!4. Needs: Creating the best plan, means focusing on needs, concerns, priorities, and relevance! Leadership planning must be far more than empty rhetoric, but a professional activity!5. Niche: How is your organization unique? What is it about the heritage, history, mission, or stakeholders, that makes it so? How will you properly adapt your approach, in order to best serve the specific niche?6. Intents; integrity; investigate: What are you hoping to achieve? Unless you begin with clearly understanding your intents, how will you achieve what is needed? Remember to never take shortcuts, while always maintaining absolute integrity! Investigate the possibilities thoroughly, and thoughtfully, and choose the best path/ course of action!

7. Nerve: Great leaders must overcome their personal fears, and expand their comfort zone. Effective leadership planning, often requires having the nerve to do what lesser individuals won’t attempt!8. Generate goodwill; growth: Will your plans seek to generate goodwill, and will you articulate your reasoning, so others believe in them? A great leader always focuses on consistent growth! These 8 steps only touch the surface, in terms of the essentials of leadership PLANNING. However, you must start somewhere!
